Peter Joenks, AASSP Assistant Principal of the Year
Peter Joenks, Assistant Principal of Springdale High School, was named by the Arkansas Association of Secondary School Principals as the 2010 state winner and nominee for National Assistant Principal of the Year.
Mr. Joenks received his Masters in Education from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. He was a physics and chemistry teacher for 15 years before he became an assistant principal at Springdale High School.
With his desire to help at-risk students, Mr. Joenks has worked hard to help develop “The Sophomore Center” at Springdale High School. The program helps those students transition into high school and has led to higher achievement and less absenteeism. Before the program was implemented one-third of all sophomores were failing biology and a quarter were failing geometry.
Believing that all students need a caring adult in their corner, Mr. Joenks created “Adopt-A-Pup,” a program assigning each at-risk student an adult mentor, a teacher, administrator, secretary, custodian or cafeteria worker.
Because of his commitment to students and to education, Peter Joenks is the 2010 Arkansas Secondary Assistant Principal of the Year.
